Flowery Branch Bay Park Trail

Project Partners:

Georgia Mountains Regional Commission; City of Flowery Branch; Appalachian Regional Commission

Summary:

The Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC) supported the City of Flowery Branch in planning for the development of a 1.75-mile trail that links Flowery Branch Bay Park to the city’s downtown district. Designed to enhance connectivity and promote walkability, the trail will provide residents and visitors with a safe, accessible route to local businesses, recreational areas, and community amenities. GMRC staff assisted the City with the preparation and submission of an Appalachian Regional Commission Area Development grant to help fund the project. The trail is expected to boost foot traffic, benefiting all 16 downtown businesses by increasing visibility and revenue, while also helping to revitalize the local tourism economy. In addition to economic benefits, the trail promotes physical activity and wellness by offering expanded outdoor recreation opportunities for both residents and visitors.

Planning Department:

City of Young Harris Master Plan

Project Partners:

City of Young Harris and City Council; Young Harris Main Street; Young Harris College; Carl Vinson Institute of Government (University of Georgia) ; Fanning Institute (University of Georgia).

Summary:

To support the revitalization of downtown Young Harris, the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission (GMRC) partnered with the City of Young Harris to lead the development of a comprehensive master plan. Focusing on the area between Main Street and the new SR 76 bypass currently under construction, the plan also considers key connections to Young Harris College and other destinations throughout the valley. GMRC facilitated the public engagement process and developed the final planning document, ensuring that the plan reflected the community’s vision and priorities. The master plan provides strategic guidance for land use, economic development, pedestrian infrastructure, public investment, and policy decisions. As a result, proposed projects within the plan are now eligible for critical federal and state funding opportunities, including the Land and Water Conservation Fund and an alternative transportation grant aimed at improving safe connectivity.
